VSthief Olabode Ibiyinka George has an enviable CV. He is a retired Nigerian Navy officer, former military governor, former chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority, former national vice-chairman of the Southwest Zone of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and former national vice-chairman (South ) Of the party .
Born November 21, 1945 in Lagos, George attended the University of Lagos, where he obtained a B.Sc and an MBA. He became a commodore in the Nigerian Navy and served as Military Governor of the former Ondo State between 1988 and 1990. In 1993 he was appointed Main Staff Officer of the General Staff, General Oladipo Diya (retired) and served in that capacity. until 1997. He was also principal of the Nigerian National War College (NWC).
In 1999, George was appointed president of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) where he introduced some reforms in the functioning of the agency. In February 2001, while visiting the ports of Delta, he called for increased security and also highlighted the problem of late payments of large sums owed to the port authority by organizations such as the Petroleum Products Marketing Company. , the Nigerian National Shipping Line, Delta Steel Company and Central Water Transport Company.
In April 2001, George identified delays in the clearance of goods as one of the causes of port congestion. And in May of the same year, he called for the construction of new dry ports and warehouses to combat congestion. In September, he ordered all empty containers to be removed from Lagos seaports to free up space. The NPA under him has undoubtedly witnessed a lot of progress and reform. And for these and more, he’s the winner of the Sun LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT Award, 2020.
