Is Obinna Nwosu the first Abia politician to be verified on Twitter?

To claim: Obinna Nwosu in a tweet claims he is the first politician in the history of Abia State to be twitter verified.

Verdict: FALSE. Obinna Nwosu is not the first politician from Abia to be verified on Twitter, as we discovered that Mao Ohunbunwa, also a state politician, had his Twitter account verified in 2017.

Obinna Nwosu, an independent London-trained Oracle finance and database consultant, was a candidate for Governor for the 2023 Abia State elections, but his dream of becoming Governor was cut short as he recently resigned.

On Friday, February 18, Mr. Nwosu (@obi_Nwosu), claims he was the first politician from Abia State to be verified on Twitter. He shared the screenshot of his notification page with a congratulatory message that his account was verified.

“Guess who just got twitter verified. This makes me the first politician from Abia State in history to be twitter verified,” his tweet read.

The blue tick or blue verified badge on Twitter which shows that a public interest account is genuine was introduced in 2009. For receive this badge, his account must be authentic, notable and active.

Recognized categories for verification include government, news outlets and individuals in the news, businesses, brands and organizations, entertainment, sports and games, activists and organizers, and content creators. content or other influential individuals.

This badge is a big deal for many Nigerians, especially public figures.

This is a bold statement to make considering there are older politicians in Abia State who are more popular. We have therefore seen the need to verify this assertion.

Verification

Mr Nwosu, who joined Twitter in January 2017, has been criticized for celebrating the victory. A Twitter user, PrivateKing of Item (@jiswitu) pointed out that there is another verified Abia State politician named Mao Ohuabunwa.

We have looked at politicians in Abia State from 2009 when the blue badge came into existence until now and represents those on Twitter.

A look at the few people who were on Twitter, like Enyinnaya Abaribethe state governor, Okezie Ikpeazuformer governor Orji Uzor Kalou, Alex Oti, Uchechukwu Ogahand Ossy Prestige, showed that they are not all verified.

We checked the Senator’s Twitter page mentioned by the Twitter user in the comments section. A visit to Mao Ohuabunwa (@SenOhuabunwa) The Twitter page showed that his account, opened in June 2015, is verified. Mr Ohuabunwa represented Abia North Senate District in the 8th Senate.

After establishing that Mr. Nwosu and Mr. Ohuabunwa had been verified, we needed to know which account got the verified badge first. We contacted Twitter support via email to request their verification date. Twitter responded, saying it doesn’t monitor emails, and advised us to visit the help center or submit a request through its online form.

However, Twitter help Center and its online form did not help with this information as it does not have a research or survey topic that provides this detail.

We also tried tracing older tweets, especially verified tweets to see if that would give a clue, but that didn’t help.

We searched Mr. Ohabunwa’s Twitter page on return machine, an Internet archive. One of the earliest captures is from May 24, 2020. Records show that Mr Ohabunmwa tweeted about his birthday from a verified account.

Even with this confirmation, it is still unclear when Mr. Ohabunwa obtained the verification. We then contacted the politician who directed inquiries to his aide, Uche Okoli.

“We had this account verified in February 2017,” Mr. Okoli said in a phone interview with DUBAWA. “We felt it was appropriate that as a serving senator at the time, his Twitter account be verified so that any information from the handle is believed to be correct and referenced.”

Mr Okoli then provided a screenshot of the email from Twitter confirming Mr Ohabunwa’s verification status. DUBAWA has confirmed that the screenshot is genuine.

The screenshot shows that Mr. Ohabunwa was verified on February 22, 2017, five years before Mr. Nwosu was verified in 2022 and just a month after he (Mr. Nwosu) joined Twitter.

Conclusion

Our findings show that Obinna Nwosu is not the first politician from Abia State to be verified on Twitter. We found another politician from Abia State, Mao Ohabunwa, who was verified in 2017. Mr. Nwosu’s claim is false.
