Governor Hochul announces winter surge plan 2.0
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the Winter Surge Plan 2.0, a new targeted effort to strengthen New York’s fight against the winter surge. Governor Hochul’s comprehensive plan focuses on five key areas: keeping students in school, doubling the number of masks and tests, preventing serious illness and death, increasing access to vaccines and boosters, and working with local leaders. Hours before the New Year begins, Governor Hochul also urged New Yorkers to celebrate the New Year in a safe and responsible manner.
“As we head into the holiday weekend, New York State is mobilizing all the resources at its disposal to combat the sudden onset of winter and keep New Yorkers safe,” Governor Hochul said. “We can ride this wave through targeted actions, partnering with local leaders, and taking common-sense measures to protect us all: getting vaccinated, getting boosted and wearing a mask indoors. “
“We have all the tools to ensure the safety of our families and our communities”, Acting State Health Commissioner Dr Mary T. Bassett said. “We have to make sure we use them all. Governor Hochul’s targeted plan to expand access to immunizations and boosters, masks and testing, and increase measures to protect our health workers is the comprehensive strategy needed to tackle the rapidly spreading Omicron variant. Leveraging these layered mitigation tactics is how we will protect the health of New Yorkers and effectively deal with the winter surge. “
