A 55-year-old Dalit government official and his wife were found murdered in their home in an Azamgarh village on Monday morning with their throats slit with a sharp weapon, police said.
Nagina (55 years old), working as “lekhpal‘ (custodian of revenue) in Mau District Consolidation Department, and his wife Nagina Devi, 52, were murdered late on Sunday evening as they slept in their village house in Tithaupur under the police station area of Tarwan in the district, Azamgarh Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya said.
Some unidentified miscreants burst into the couple’s house late Sunday night and killed them by slitting their throats with a sharp weapon and left, Mr Arya said.
Police learned of the double murder on Monday morning after being told by neighbors of the victims, he said.
Police then arrived at the scene with the canine squad and fingerprint experts and took the bodies in their possession and sent them for an autopsy, the SP said.
The late Nagina was the eldest of three brothers and had three daughters, one of whom is married, police added.
The double murder of a Dalit couple in Azamgarh district came days after four members of a scheduled caste family were murdered in their village house in Gohri under Phaphamau police station in the district of Prayagraj on Wednesday evening.
Among the victims were a 50-year-old man and his 45-year-old wife, as well as their 16-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son. Relatives of the family members who were killed had alleged that a continuing land dispute between the victims and their upper-caste neighbor was behind the multiple murder.
Reacting strongly to the double murder of the Dalit couple, BSP Chairman Mayawati called on the state government to immediately verify the recurrence of such incidents and take stern action against the culprits.
“This is an extremely shocking, painful and commendable incident of the murder of a Dalit couple by their throat cutting in Azamgarh district days after the Prayagraj killings. The government must immediately stop such atrocities against Dalits and take strict action against the culprits,” the BSP chairman said in a tweet.
